FOUR COMPELLING REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD HIRE YOUR OWN COACH

The business world is changing at an ever-increasing pace. As employees we are expected to reinvent ourselves, adapt and innovate. We are constantly being asked to bring something new to the table and solve problems with clarity, creativity and courage.

This has led to many companies investing in and providing in-house coaching. Many people are taking up this support in order to keep up with the continuous demands of work. Others are considering coaching but feel hesitant or discouraged if their workplace is not able to offer it to them.

But wait – don’t lose heart! I am here to encourage you to consider all your possibilities. Here are four reasons why hiring your own coach may be a much better option for you.

  1. YOUR SUCCESS COMES DOWN TO CHOOSING THE BEST COACH FOR YOU

Many organisations develop in-house coaching schemes where your colleagues become coaches after attending a programme and gaining a basic qualification. This is the most cost-effective way of offering coaching within an organisation, but there are downsides – namely your privacy and the quality of the service.

Other organisations have long-standing contracts with firms that supply coaching. In this scenario, you will be assigned a coach or at best be given the opportunity to choose from two that have been selected for you.

When you hire your own coach, you are the boss. You can interview as many coaches as you like and choose someone who fits you best. You will be able to enjoy full privacy, confidentiality, an unbiased approach and a totally fresh perspective. You can also choose a coach with experience and credibility.

  1. YOUR SUCCESS COMES DOWN TO DECIDING THE AREAS YOU WANT TO FOCUS ON

When a coach is contracted by your workplace, there is often an expectation that you will be working on a specific area that is work-related. But what if you really want to work on something else? What if you know that the support you need involves some other underlying issue? What if you need to address an issue that is sensitive or stress-related? Perhaps you want to move on and progress to a different role? Perhaps you want a promotion? Or work on something that involves your private life?

By hiring your own coach, you don’t have to worry about any of that. You get to choose which areas you want to focus on and give attention to. You don’t have to answer to anyone – only to yourself. You don’t have to feel bad after you managed to get that new job after utilising company resources but are now leaving your role. And many people do. Your success comes down to your ability to choose your focus freely, with no strings attached.

  1. YOUR SUCCESS COMES DOWN TO BEING IN CHARGE OF YOUR COACHING PROGRAMME FROM START TO FINISH

Most organisations have processes in place that must be followed if you are expressing an interest in coaching. You will have to complete an application form outlining your reasons for seeking this support and what you want to achieve. It can take a while for your application to be reviewed and approved – or not. People whose applications have not been approved after several weeks of waiting have ended up contacting me. Many organisations offer only a limited number of coaching slots and often you have to be at the right level to access them.

When you hire your own coach, you are in change of your programme. You get to choose when to start, how you want to work and when to finish. There is no reporting on your progress. You can consider programmes of varied intensity and length and choose one that works best for you. And you can start as soon as tomorrow!

  1. YOUR SUCCESS COMES DOWN TO BEING CLEAR THAT COACHING IS AN INVESTMENT IN YOURSELF AND YOUR LIFE

Coaching is an investment in yourself and your life – but only if you are the investor. Don’t forget that when your company invests in coaching, they are investing in their business rather than you personally.

To get the most out of a coaching programme you need to be the main shareholder. That puts you in a powerful position and gives you the determination to succeed. There is a different dynamic when you are taking care of the bill – you give it everything, demand value, commit fully and as result create outstanding results.

An hour of insightful conversation is worth much more than a week of going through the motions with no vision, no passion or poor engagement – or a week full of stress, worry and anxiety. Coaching can help to interrupt the usual flow of events and give you the fresh ideas, energy and clarity to take your next steps.

People who hire their own coaches reap the best rewards. They develop the ability to stay current, resilient, engaged, positive and productive. They are the leaders of their own lives who know how to shine and keep buoyant and fresh.

If you are considering coaching, my advice is – hire your own coach.
